Day 30

Rut 3:9

“She answered, “I am Ruth, your servant. Spread your wings over your servant, for you are a redeemer.”

Rest in the asking.

People asking for things constantly bother me. Organizations that are always asking for money. Churches that are always asking for something. I have never requested help from the government. I have never claimed my rights. I have never even asked for the desired salary in a job interview; I have just received what they offer without a counteroffer. It is part of my DNA. I simply do not like to ask, even if I regret it later, and later I see what others have and I could have enjoyed. Pride? Maybe? Arrogance? Perhaps. Stupidity? Hmm. But that attitude has brought me nothing but anger and disappointment at myself, anxiety, and more work for fewer rewards. There are countless polls where people are asked why they didn’t do a certain thing, and the answer is almost always the same: no one asked.

The Word of God says we don’t have because we don’t ask, or we ask with the wrong motive to spend in our own desires (James 4:3). But not asking with the wrong motivation is another extreme. What happens when asking is the right thing to do, and we simply don’t do it,  whether because of pride or any other motive?

Rut and Naomi knew what was right. They knew that, in their culture, they would not survive if they were not under the protection of a man. But girl, entre nous, (and this is strictly my opinion), sometimes men don’t have the slightest idea. I would like to go out on a limb and think that Boaz was so busy in the business, the fields, the harvest, the employees, the threshing…, that he didn’t think for one moment that he was in line for redeeming. Enter Ruth. Humbly, but bravely, in full knowledge of her position. And she proposed marriage.

What boldness! A woman proposing to a man? Well, sometimes we have not because we ask not. Why don’t we ask? Pride. Lack of humility. There are many reasons, but almost always, because we are afraid of not getting what we ask for.

We have not because we ask not. Meanwhile, our Father is sitting on a throne, surrounded by grace and willing to give us if only we approach him and ask him. And best of all, the more grace He gives, the more grace He has. Friend, that is called overabundance. So there, #getittogethergirl. Come to the throne. Ask. Receive. Your redeemer awaits. Open your heart and tell Him what He knows you desire, but are afraid to ask. Differently than Boaz, God does know, but you need to ask. Because sometimes it is we who do not have an idea. Propose marriage to God. Ask Him to redeem you. Ask Him to redeem your dreams, your family, your life, your work, your fears, your sin, your physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. He has something for everyone. He lacks nothing. And if He lacks nothing, neither do you.

Oh, dear Father! How many times have I lacked for not asking? Lord, I have lived like a beggar and not realized I am the daughter of the King of kings and Lord of lords. You, Lord, are sitting on your throne with overabundant grace, which is mine for the taking, if only I have the boldness of coming and asking for it. Give me that grace, Lord, give me the peace that surpasses all understanding and all logic. You are the redeemer. You are the Lord of my threshing floor. Without you, I am nothing, and I can do nothing. Spread your wings over your servant. In the name of Jesus, amen.

My reflection:

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”

Matthew 7:7
