the power of silence.
“He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth.” (Isaiah 53:7 NLT)
“But Jesus remained silent.” (Matthew 26:63).
It’s the norm today to open social network pages and see all kinds of opinions and personal statements. Nowadays, we know what everyone thinks about anything and everything. We can even detect someone’s personality and struggles by what they post.
The problem
for mothers of prodigals is that sometimes they follow us or are our friends on the platform. And they also post nasty things sometimes—things that hurt, things that cut deeply into our feelings. So we feel tempted to answer or post something passively aggressively ourselves, as a response or a defense. Please refrain yourself. Sometimes, the hardest thing to do is to stay silent.
Talking
is not always the best option. In the most crucial time of his life, when he
was unjustly being accused and was facing torture and death, our Lord had the
courage to remain silent. Yes, it is
hard. Very hard. But the alternative would be escalating a war that is not ours
to fight.
Pray and fill in the blank with your child’s name: Father,
please give me the wisdom to know when to speak and when to stay silent. This is
only one more battle in a greater war for the soul of my child. Let my love for
_____ be shown in my silence, while I quietly bring them to you. In Jesus’ name,
amen.
